You might not know this but music can not only increase the enjoyment of your walk but also help make it more productive. Each song has a BPM (Beats Per Minute) and by choosing the right songs you can keep yourself motivated and hiking. We have put together a guide to choosing the right songs as well as suggestions for your own hiking playlist.
STARTING OFF: 90 – 115 BPM
At the start of your hike you want a lower BMP to get you warmed up and in the mood for your hike. If you start off too high you will burn out quicker so pick songs at this tempo to keep your speed moderated
We recommend:
Elbow – One Day Like This: 90 BPM
Elbow – Grounds for Divorce: 92 BPM
Jackie Wilson – (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher: 95 BPM
Tina Turner – The Best: 104 BPM
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill: 108 BPM
KEEPING HER LIT: 115 – 130 BPM
You’re warmed up and on your way. It’s time to pick up the pace rock your way to the top. A slight increase in BPM gets you through up to half way.
We recommend:
The Killers – All These Things That I’ve Done: 118 BPM
Elton John – Crocodile Rock: 120 BPM
MK – 17: 122 BPM
Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now: 124 BPM
Joel Corry – Lonely: 124 BPM
The Killers – When You Were Young: 128 BPM
WOAH WE’RE HALF WAY THERE: 130 – 175 BPM
We’ve reached the half way point, the point where spirits drop and tiredness sets in. At this point you need to increase the BPM to push you through the wall and get that second wave of energy
We recommend:
Endor – Pump It Up: 129 BPM
Marvin Gaye – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough: 132 BPM
Britney Spears – Toxic: 132 BPM
The Weather Girls – It’s Raining Men: 136 BPM
Mango X MathMan – Mad Ting: 140 BPM
The Beatles – Hey Jude: 147 BPM
Normani – Motivation: 171 BPM
WE’RE ON TOP OF THE WORLD: Rest and Relax
Congratulations you did it! You pushed through and made it to the top of Ireland. Now is the time for you to sit and take in the splendour of landscape Ireland has to offer.
We recommend:
Radical Face – Welcome Home: 145 BPM
Florence and the Machine – Cosmic Love: 140 BPM
Neil Young – Harvest Moon: 113 BPM
Kate Nash – Merry Happy: 90 BPM
Bon Iver – Holoscene: 75BPM
THE DESCENT: Take Her Handy
Your descent from the summit should be easier than going up because of the added benefit of gravity. Some hikes can be steep so its good to take care when going down so we recommend a lower BPM as this can also be used as a warm down.
