The Great Sugar Loaf - Review

Hello! Welcome back to All Ireland Hike.

In this mini series we will be reviewing some of our 2020 lockdown hikes for you kicking off with The Great Sugar Loaf.

The Great Sugar Loaf dominates the skyline of South Dublin and Wicklow, the distinctive stand alone cone shape cant be missed. An easy climb at just 200M, the Red route is the most direct and can be easily seen from the bottom right up to the top. Starting at the car park, you travel though a field area to the base of the mountain. From there it gets rocky so good shoes are a must. While only 200M, this climb can get steep particularly near the end where the climb is close to vertical.

From the top you can see all over Dublin and Wicklow.. if you're lucky and don't get caught on a foggy overcast day like we did!

The Great Sugar Loaf was the first All Ireland Hike of the year and so holds a special place in our heart.

Things to note:

- Height: 200M

- Climb time: 1-2 hours depending how long you spend at the top (we spend a long time here)

- Red route from arch way is the most direct to the top

- There is a free car park but spaces can be limited in the popular spot

- Bring a fleece as it can get cold on top

- Wear good shoes as ground is rocky

Stay tuned for more mountain reviews
